Selma Blackburn graduated from Hendrix in 1990 with B.A.s in Fine Art and Elementary Education. She has taught watercolor courses for 28 years, including at Hendrix from 1997 to 1998. She continues to teach at the Arkansas Arts Center and assist with Louisiana Tech University’s Continuing Education Summer Watercolor Encounter Program.

Blackburn has assisted with art excursions to Italy and Indonesia, plus has traveled to Mexico and Guatemala to paint. She currently holds Signature Membership status with the National Watercolor Society, the American Watercolor Society, and the Mid-Southern Watercolorists. Blackburn joined the Mid-Southern Watercolorists in 1977 and continues to volunteer with the organization in a variety of capacities. She has previously held positions as its secretary, president, and member-at-large. She will also judge the organization’s 2020 juried exhibition. As an artist, Blackburn’s style runs the gamut from non-objective to abstract to interpretative representation. She finds particular inspiration in themes of people, landscape, and whimsy.
