Leeah Joo was born in 1971 in Seoul and raised by a father who was a sculptor and a mother who was an illustrator. When she was 10 years old her family moved to the United States in Indianapolis, where she grew up. Her art style consists of combining Eastern and Western painting styles to examine how we look at textures and fabrics. Many of her pieces reflect what is uncovered and what stays hidden away. In this piece, “The Ballad of Frankie Silver,” the viewer is invited to peer deeply into the room behind the window and see what is happening inside. What can you see?

Paul Faris was a Hendrix English professor and pho

Paul Faris was a Hendrix English professor and photographer who was very involved on campus, joining in 1928 and retiring in 1971. During this long period, he was the college's publications and publicity officer, helped to edit the college catalog and alumni quarterly, served as secretary of the Board of Trustees for 15 years, and was the sponsor of the student yearbook and newspaper. Faris worked with Louis Freund, and was fascinated with Arkansas. This photograph captures the intense gaze of an Arkansas woman sitting in front of a log cabin. Brrr! Some cold as a relief for this Arkansas heat! Roxanne Everett has been a National Park Backcountry Ranger and bases all of her art work primarily on ecology and scenes in nature. Her work as an artist began when as a Backcountry Ranger, she traveled around the high Sierras and kept a watercolor journal of the landscapes around her. This painting comes from part of her travels around the mountains!

Arkansas is known for its beautiful wildlife. It is the natural state! Don H. Marr, who we have featured before, is a native Missourian who received his master's degree in fine art from the University of Arkansas in 1958. His paintings reflect romantic realism, capturing wonder and ethereal beauty in acrylic on canvas. He taught art and art history at Hendrix College for 41 years. This work “Somewhere Along the Way,” makes us want to canoe the Buffalo! What are your summer plans?

One of the oldest pieces in our collection is Joha

One of the oldest pieces in our collection is Johann Culverhouse’s “A Difficult Lesson” from 1867! Hendrix College was founded in 1876. Johann Culverhouse was born in Rotterdam, Holland around the year 1820, although he spent many years living in New York. He was strongly influenced by the work of 17th century Dutch artists, as shown in his "candlelight paintings," a style that specialized in nighttime scenes, illuminated by candles and moonlight. "A Difficult Lesson," featuring a full moon looking in through the window as well as the warm glow of the candle on the right, showcase some of the "candlelight painting" qualities that he became known for.

One of the more difficult media to work with is colored pencils. Artist Kitty Mashburn created with piece using this media. Colored pencils requires precision and insight for detail and depth. The pencils are not the easiest to blend with and require many layers of color to reach the desired effect. Maybe you should try colored pencils this summer!
