Fall 2025 OPENING RECEPTION

September 12 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join the WMA on Friday, Sept 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. for the opening reception of three new fall exhibitions: “WILLIAM HAWES: UNPOPULAR ART,” “The Silent Sound Within: Photographs by Paul Caponigro and David Dennard,” and “ROBERT KINSELL: BEAUTIFUL LIES.”

Clem Hawes ’78, son of William “Bill” Hawes, and photographer David Dennard will be in attendance lending their insight and expertise about the work on view. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Parking is available in front of the Dawkins Welcome Center at Winfield and Harkrider Street. This event is free and open to all!

WILLIAM HAWES: UNPOPULAR ART – William Henry Hawes taught in the art department at Hendrix College between 1967 and 1987 and was regionally known as a sculptor and painter. Generations of his students knew him as “Uncle Bill” – an approachable teacher who always engaged with their work using his acute eye and deep knowledge of art history. While Hawes always claimed that he made “unpopular art,” the dynamic and enigmatic beauty of his sculptures contradict this claim.

The Silent Sound Within: Photographs by Paul Caponigro and David Dennard – Paul Caponigro, one of the most celebrated landscape photographers of the 20th century, passed away on November 10, 2024, at the age of 91. Known for his ethereal images of the natural world and ancient sites, Paul’s work transcended mere documentation, offering profound meditations on light, form, and spirit.

ROBERT KINSELL: BEAUTIFUL LIES – I paint because I believe in magic. No, not supernatural, otherworldly, unicorn-and-fairies magic … but Three Card Monte, sleight-of-hand, fool-the-eye, con-game magic. I take to heart that the root of “Art” is also the root of “Artificial”. — Robert Kinsell
